The Future of Rope Access: Technology, Drones, and Advanced NDT Inspection

Industrial rope access has its roots in caving and mountaineering. Its use was once considered niche, useful only for extreme conditions and hard-to-reach places. However, over time, it has become a highly respected and common approach to the maintenance of construction, infrastructure, energy, oil, and gas industries.

Integrating Drones (UAVs) to Enhance Visual Inspections

The development of drone technology is revolutionising visual inspections. Where technicians once had to travel into hard-to-reach places to see their condition, drones can now be sent in advance. Their advanced cameras can easily get a detailed view of the area, all of which can be monitored in real time to identify any potential problems.

Drones are also equipped with thermal, infrared, and LiDAR sensors, allowing them to detect structural anomalies, heat loss, and other issues not visible to the naked eye. This ability to study areas in advance not only prevents wasted technician trips and energy, but it can also help technicians avoid hazardous areas, minimising the risk technicians face.   • AI and Data Analytics: This can be used to analyse historical data to identify high-risk areas or predict equipment wear.
  • Digital Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS): Can be completed on-site, ensuring safety protocols are reviewed.
  • Geofencing: Digital, location-based systems can alert technicians to potential hazards and ensure work is completed in safe zones.
