What is IRATA Level 2?

IRATA Level 2 certification represents an intermediate qualification for experienced rope access technicians. Unlike Level 1 technicians who work under direct supervision, Level 2 technicians possess advanced skills in complex rigging, sophisticated rescue operations, and technical problem-solving—all while still operating under the supervision of a Level 3 safety supervisor.

Level 2 technicians bridge the gap between entry-level work and supervisory roles, making them highly sought-after professionals in industries spanning construction, mining, offshore oil and gas, wind energy, and infrastructure maintenance.

Prerequisites for Level 2 Training

To ensure your success in Level 2 training and assessment, you must meet the following requirements:

Experience Requirements

  • Valid Level 1 Certification: Your current IRATA Level 1 certificate must be valid on the day of assessment
  • Minimum 12 Months Experience: At least one year from your Level 1 assessment date
  • 1,000 Working Hours: Documented and signed off in your IRATA logbook by a Level 3 supervisor
  • Competency at Level 1: You must be fully competent in all Level 1 practical and theory requirements before attending Level 2 training

Pre-Course Preparation

Candidates without adequate pre-assessment training and thorough knowledge of the syllabus are unlikely to meet the required standard. We strongly recommend:

  • Regular practice of Level 1 techniques
  • Reviewing the IRATA Code of Practice (ICOP)
  • Pre-course evaluation with your employer or training provider
  • Ensuring your logbook is up-to-date and verified

Important Note: If you’re not competent at Level 1, you may require additional refresher training before attempting Level 2. Limited time is available for refresher training during Level 2 courses, so arriving well-prepared is essential.
