Working high above the ground requires great skill and rigorous safety standards to be conducted safely. With this in mind, if you are trained in industrial rope access, it is vital to undertake regular refresher training to stay certified with IRATA.

The Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) is the international authority on rope access. Their certification is accepted by industries worldwide. They deliver comprehensive training that includes real-world applications, safety procedures and rescue techniques.

Undertaking recertification is required every three years to ensure your skills stay current. Recertification requires you to attend a refresher course and pass a practical and theoretical assessment.

Understanding the Importance of Your IRATA Logbook and Logging Requirements

The IRATA Logbook is a vital tool for a technician’s professional development, career advancement, and skill verification. It records the rope access technician’s experience, detailing tasks, location, hours and height. This is then signed by the supervisor. Recertification requires a minimum level of experience to progress. All experience must be performed in compliance with IRATA’s strict safety standards.

Technicians who wish to undertake training require a logbook. Lost logbooks require immediate replacement, and you will have to obtain credible references for lost hours.

The IRATA logbook:

• Proves eligibility for Level 2 or 3 assessments, illustrating technician’s hours and experience.
• Helps demonstrate acquired skill and technical knowledge to employers, clients and assessors.
• Holds technicians to account and verifies they meet training and safety standards.
• Helps identify patterns and implement safety improvements by documenting incidents and near-misses.

Refresher Training vs. Full Assessment: Choosing the Right Path

When it comes to recertification, you have two choices. You can either get IRATA refresher training or a full assessment.

The best option for you depends on your current certification status and whether you have been working on ropes recently. In general, refresher training is there to help you maintain skills after a break away from rope access, whereas a full assessment is needed to formally renew your certification.

If you have had no rope access work in the last 6 months but your certificate is still valid, refresher training is suitable for you. Alternatively, refresher training also suits those who have worked in rope access recently but want to sharpen their skills,

If your certification has expired or is approaching expiration, you will need to undertake a full assessment.

What Happens if Your Certification Expires? (The Revalidation Process)

If your certification expires, you will not be able to perform rope access. You will also have to go through a revalidation process that changes depending on how long it has been since you performed rope access.

You will receive the following:

Expired by 1 day to 6 Months

A 4-day revalidation course and 1 day assessment at your previous level.

Expired by 6 to 24 Months

In addition to the 4-day course, you must do a 1-day refresher course with an IRATA training company.

Expired by More Than 24 Months

You must re-qualify at the level immediately below your past level.

To stay proficient between recertification:

• Log work hours.
• Prevent Skill Fade: Avoid taking more than 6 months between rope access practice.
• Revalidate your certificate before expiry.
• Practice regularly.
• Master rescues.

• Study the theory.
• Seek mentorship.
• Stay physically fit.
